Time to Start a Grass
Roots Campaign
Health Matters
Minutes Article

July 18, 2003
On June 6, 2003 I wrote "Government to Revisit Trans Fats---Long Overdue!" In the ezine I told you how the government is now advising against ingesting trans fatty acids found in hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils to protect against heart disease.

In other articles I've written about tests demonstrating that these trans fats also caused Type 2 diabetes and that it is now predicted that one in three kids will get Type 2 diabetes.

Our country is headed for disaster health wise and all our government can do is recommend that we should cut back on foods with trans fats instead of getting to the source and banning trans fats from our foods. In Denmark and New Zealand, that is what they have done.

There are some food manufacturers who are now making their foods without hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils, but only in small numbers and with few foods. Therefore, because our government won't help us, we must help ourselves.

And do it we can! Let's you and me start a grass roots campaign demanding that all manufacturers quit using these trans fat oils.

Here's how it would work:

You send a copy of the form letter I have prepared to every company whose products you would like to buy but don't, because they contain trans fats, and mean it. You stop using their product. You send the form letter to your friends, relatives and acquaintances and ask them to do the same.

Do this and we will reduce the incidence of heart disease and maybe wipe out Type 2 diabetes.

Here's the letter to use and modify it if you wish:

"Att: Consumer Relations Department.

I used to enjoy using your product (name of product or products) but have stopped since learning about the government and the Harvard School of Public Health reports, as well as reports on the Internet, about the heart and Type 2 diabetic health risks associated with hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils.

I recommend that you research these problems on the Internet where you will find much data confirming the health risks associated with these trans fat oils. You might be interested to learn that the countries of Denmark and New Zealand have banned the use of hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils in all food stuff resulting in a population much healthier than ours.

I would like to buy your product again, and will, once you remove all trans fats from your product which are so detrimental to my health..

There are new products now being advertised that contain no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils. These companies have a regard for our health. Why can't your company be like them?"

You need to practice what you preach and you may want to modify the letter a little and send it to McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken, etc. Certainly encourage all not to eat in fast food restaurants until they mend their ways.

We can win. We just need to be persistent.

Please pass this on the 10, 20, 50, 100 people or more and ask them to do the same. We need to stop the vegetable oil companies and food processors, and fast food restaurants from destroying the health of our children, and the millions of others who have, or will get, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease because of them.

Thank You,
