Nutritional Gene Testing... The New Gimmick For Weight Loss? When it comes to ingenious ways to suck money out of the American public, the medical profession ranks right up there with the best of them. Now our scientific community has a new gimmick to offer overweight and obese people, “nutritional DNA tests.” What they are marketing, and I do mean marketing, is that they can determine DNA trouble spots that leave you vulnerable to vitamin deficiencies. |

They imply that all of your fat problems and susceptibility to degenerative diseases are genetic nutritional deficiencies, and if you know what your nutritional genetic deficiencies are, you can correct them and that would lead to a loss of weight and the prevention of degenerative diseases. As to weight loss, you definitely will lose some weight as your pocket will become much lighter with the genetic flight of your dollars. One such company, based in Seattle, charges $395 to test 19 nutrition-linked genes claiming that if people understand their genetic pre-disposition to poor nutrition, it can empower them to do whatever it takes to stay healthy. This is only one of many companies, clinics and nutritionists that are growing rapidly, offering the same type of genetic analysis across the United States, with prices ranging from less than $100 to as much as $2,000 depending on the range of genetic testing conducted. What they don’t tell you is that if you eat healthy, alkalize your body, take nutritional supplements and exercise, your body will take care of itself and the knowledge of whether or not you have a predisposed nutritional gene is meaningless. Also rebutting their contentions is Lisa Dorfman, Professor of Nutrition at the University of Miami and a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. She said, “I’m a registered dietitian and a licensed psychotherapist, so I know the psychology of submitting yourself to this type of thing. I think that when people find out that they have a predisposing gene, they can easily throw in the towel and say, ‘Well, you see? I can’t do anything about it, anyway’”. Dorfman also said, “One thing doesn’t do it all ---diet doesn’t cure you of everything, exercise doesn’t ---- they are all pieces of the puzzle.” It is unfortunate that so many people, who are overweight or obese, take no responsibility for their condition. They have convinced themselves, and will try to convince you if you ask, that their problem is totally genetic and that’s why they can’t lose weight and are fat. For the most part, that is simply hogwash. I have personally seen people who have told me their problem was genetic and later lost hundreds of pounds when they finally got around to eating properly, taking supplements, and exercising. I knew one chap who weighed almost 500 lbs. He finally went to a psychologist who got him to change his high sugary eating habits. (He used to snack on a pound of chocolate at a time and drink 8 to 10 bottles of soda a day). When he stated eating healthy foods, and stopped drinking soda, he lost close to 300 lbs. over a period of nine months. If you didn’t know, a bottle of soda contains about 10 teaspoons of sugar. Diet soda is not much better as it contains its own set of chemical problems. Sport drinks are also loaded with sugar and many have excessively high levels of caffeine. Additionally, I know of many obese people who have lost 100 pounds plus by just drinking ionized water and eating healthy. This is not rocket science. If you want to lose weight and prevent the formation of degenerative diseases, you need to make your body alkaline, quit eating sugar and drinking sugary drinks, ease up on the alcohol, coffee and tea, begin eating healthy, take nutritional supplements, and exercise. To market one company’s 19 gene test program, (19 out of 30,000 genes that you have in your body), they explain, “As part of its 19 gene screening, we look for variations in a gene that helps regulate the synthesis and availability of dietary folic acid.” The company continues, “If you don’t get enough folate, you are at increased risk for heart disease, colon cancer and other problems.” So what’s new? Every nutritionist knows that. We too know that. Folic acid is one of the major ingredients in our vitamin/mineral arterial cleansing formula. You don’t need to spend $400 or more to find out you should be taking a nutritional supplement that contains folic acid. Don’t get caught up in new fad testing. As Dorfman says, “You can be really scientific about this without spending money on fancy and expensive testing. Doctors already have cheap and reliable non-genetic methods to spot nutrient deficiencies and disease risk factors.” Choosing to be healthy means a life style change for most of us and we don’t need expensive gene testing to tell us that. All we need is to use a little common sense and have a willingness to change. You have control of your body --- not the gene testers --- not your doctor. You need to take responsibility for your own body. You know how you feel and how you look. Right or wrong ---- You are the one who has made the choices that have made your body what it is today! If you want to give yourself a new lease on life --- start making the right choices NOW! To your good health and longevity.
